I still remember my first exposure to a racist joke. I was Chicago Cubs father and son best friends for life shirt. Something about the devil having three terrible people come to him, one white, one Chinese, and one Black. The white and Chinese guys have to sit in the devil’s hand, and each of them melts away. When the Black guy sits there, he doesn’t melt, because “milk chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hands.” Stupid joke. But the telling of the joke included the n-word, which was a word I’d never heard. So when I came home and repeated the joke in front of my parents, n-word included, I was told it was a really bad word. My parents were of the “color-blindness” view that was the primary way of dealing with racism at the time. Just don’t acknowledge race as a thing.
