I recently watched the first season of The Crown and the part where the Queen and her uncle the former King Edward VIII are having lunch and she asks for an apology, I had to stop watching and had to think about it for a few days. I wondered if that conversation indeed happened and I wondered, that those folks who are so fervently anti-monarchy realize that her Uncle stole her life, which directly influenced her husband and children’s life’s as well. Now more than 60 years later she is still doing a job, she never wanted, never asked for and she has done it so brilliantly, so unblemished and so honorably,

She would have become Queen when Edward anyhow as he and Wallis had no children. So Her children would have been in the line of succession anyhow. It would have meant though they could have all had a more normal upbringing and the Charles and Diana story may have been very different. Also, what would Edward have done as King would have changed WWII considerably? The Queen will go down in history as one of its most beloved figures.
